As the death toll from devastating flooding in Brazil continues
to rise, a single picture drives home the sense of loss.
Leao, a medium-sized brown mutt,
lies next to the grave of her owner,
Cristina Maria Cesario Santana, who died
in the catastrophic landslides caused by heavy rain.
This AFP/Getty picture was taken on Saturday,
the second consecutive day that the dog refused
to leave the woman's grave
at the cemetery in Teresopolis,
near Rio de Janiero.
Brazilians are bracing for more rain,
fearing more landslides after waves
of muddy water swallowed towns
in the country's worst flood disaster on record.
At least 655 deaths were reported
in a mountainous region of Rio de Janeiro state,
northeast of the city of Rio.
We are in Teresópolis, a city 90 kilometers
from Rio, where the tragedy has broken 263 lives.
There are many similar stories.
Perhaps the most famous dates from the late
nineteenth century and has as its protagonist,
the little terrier Bobby who in Scotland
is still considered a legend.
It is said that the animal was near the grave
of his master John Gray, in the churchyard
in Edinburgh for over fourteen years, until his death.
In his honor in the Scottish capital was erected a statue

Fedeltà in mezzo alla catastrofe: ha trascorso due giorni e due notti in cimitero,
accovacciato davanti alla tomba dove è stata sepolta la sua padrona,
morta sotto i fiumi di fango conseguenti alle piogge torrenziali.
Il Brasile piange per gli oltre 650 morti delle alluvioni
che hanno devastato quattro città dello Stato di Rio de Janeiro.
Ma si commuove anche per la storia del cane Leao,
la bestiola che veglia pazientemente la tomba
della sua padrona Maria Cristina Cesario Santana.
Siamo a Teresópolis, città a 90 chilometri da Rio,
dove la tragedia ha spezzato 263 vite.
E mentre si scava anche con le mani per cercare
sopravvissuti e le persone scampate alla sciagura
sono costrette a identificare i loro cari tra le centinaia di cadaveri,
la toccante foto dell'AFP che ritrare il fedele Leao fa il giro del mondo.
Storie analoghe ce ne sono tante.
Quella forse più famosa risale alla fine del XIX secolo e ha come protagonista
il piccolo terrier Bobby, che in Scozia
è considerato ancora oggi una leggenda.
Si narra che l'animale sia stato vicino alla tomba
del suo padrone John Gray, nel cortile della chiesa di Edimburgo,
per ben per quattordici anni, fino alla propria morte.
In suo onore nella capitale scozzese è stata eretta una statua.
